Breast disease has special connotations for women as breasts are more than just an organ with an obvious biological purpose during lactation: they have sexual connotations and affect a woman’s body image. This makes any alteration to the breast an emotional and often distressful experience for women.
The breast is defined as an external apocrine mammary gland whose origin is similar to the sweat glands; it is a dynamic organ that undergoes a series of changes from birth to adulthood. It contains several types of tissue: skin, glandular tissue, fibrous tissue and fatty tissue.
